AUGUST – and we take off again – this time with Carol and John – heading for 7 days covering Helsinki (Finland), Tallinn (Estonia) and Riga (Latvia). Weather warnings for lots of rain – so loaded down with macs, walking shoes and umbrellas!! This is expected of holidays in the Northern Hemisphere!
And Helsinki did not disappoint! BUT we did get a lot more sunshine than forecast and enjoyed three nights in this beautiful City.Lots of walking; amazing Scenery; beautiful architecture; Cathedrals; and really good food in some excellent restaurants spending time catching up with Carol and John over lazing dining.
A trip to Suomenlinna Fortress – World Heritage site island, and short ferry ride from the mainland. We learned some of the History around Finland and the various battles for Helsinki; the harbour areas and strategic Islands by Russian Swedish and German Troops. Another very interesting day and rain sort of held off! Next morning a short ferry ride found us in Tallin,Estonia and a beautiful late afternoon visit to the Kadriorg Palace. Another dinner and a walk through Tallin Old Town which we explored more thoroughly the following day. A good guided tour of both the Upper and lower Old Town and organised dinner for ourselves. A coach journey day the next day from Tallin to Tartu Estonia’s second biggest City. We stopped for lunch followed by a quick walk around the Old Town and along the river. A final coach run into Riga and another Country – Latvia. This is the largest of the Baltic States and Riga sits on the mouth of the River Daugava.
These three Cities, all so different but all offering much to enjoy on such short flying visits in 7 days. Riga has amazing indoor market, built inside five pavilions of old Zeppelin Hangers!
Hope you enjoy some of the photographs and scenery.
